Three Sonatas for Violin & Piano - Grieg (influences of both Leipzig training & Norwegian peasant culture - XID 5296)

£5.99

Product description

(featuring violinist Alan Loveday and pianist Leonard Cassini)

Edvard Grieg's (1843-1907) three Sonatas for Violin and Piano, do betray much of the composer's younger influences : The First Sonata (1865) is very-much influenced by the Leipzig Conservatory training that the young Norwegian received (he was sent there on the advice of a famous violinist compatriot called Ole Bull, who had heard young Edvard play the instrument).
Sonata No.1 for Violin & Piano in F major Op.8 :-
I Allegro con brio ; II Allegro quasi andantino ; III Allegro molto vivace.

At the age of twenty-four, Grieg composed his Second Sonata (1867), a curious mixture of initial seriousness, which swiftly moves on to a gay dance and other dance rhythms, revealing the extent to which a Norwegian nationalist called Rikard Nordraak had also influenced the young man, by introducing the formative composer to peasant folk music, and other native folk idioms.
Sonata No.2 for Violin & Piano in G major Op.13 :-
I Lento dolores - poco allegro - allegro vivace ; II Andante tranquillo ; III Allegro animato.

Grieg's Third Sonata was the one which once-enjoyed the most popularity, out of all three works ; It reverts back to the classical form, and is sometimes subtitled "Traqic". The first passionate but conflicting movement, gives way to a second movement which can be surmised as a love song of great beauty ... Before a surprisingly energetic finale, featuring a tragic mood.
Sonata No.3 for Violin & Piano in C minor Op.45 :-
I Allegro molto ed appassionato ; II Allegretto espressivo all Rmanza ; III Allegro animato.

Records graded visually to RRPG grades (record/sleeve) EX/VG+.
