Giacomo Puccini (1858-1924) continued on his classic theme of, young lovers battling against both their situations and elders, with the opera "Tosca".
Set in Rome in 1800, against the backdrop of a threatened-Napoelonic invasion, the sadistic Chief of Police, Scarpia, turns his attention to capturing the fugitive, Angelotti ; meanwhile, Angelotti is helped to escape from Scarpia's clutches, via help from the painter Cavaradossi ... In revenge, Scarpia has Cavadossi tortured, within earshot of his lover, Tosca.
Scarpia now has the chance to play the dirty old man ; he promises Tosca that, if she gives herself to him, he will make the firing squad, who are to shoot Cavaradossi, fire only blanks. In the outcome of the synopsis, all three main protagonists - Scarpia, Tosca, and her lover, Cavaradossi - meet their maker.
