Wagner's The Ring of the Nibelung Conducted by Furtwangler (13xCD Box Set)

£29.99 Out Of Stock

Product description

Richard Wagner's The Ring of the Nibelung/ Der Ring des Nibelungen, performed by the Orchestra Sinfonica e Coro della Radio Italiana and conducted by Wilhelm Furtwangler, is a 265 x 265 x 22 mm approx. box set consisting of 13 CDs in card sleeves with an illustrated 24 page booklet. The box and booklet are pristine and the CDs are in excellent condition with no marks or scratches. Each of the four sets of CDs is positioned in a quarter division of the box. The booklet is a guide to the scenes and acts, with the first half in German and the second in English.

From the introduction to the booklet: "Surprisingly, none of Furtwangler's legendary performances of the 'Ring' from Bayreuth (or from anywhere in Germany) have been preserved. A few excerpts of his triumphs with this monumental work in London have survived, as well as two complete 'Rings' from Italy - one, a live performance from La Scala, Milan, in 1950 and the other a 1952 radio production recorded in Rome. The projected complete cycle, to be made with the Vienna Philharmonic, never grew beyond the 'Valkyrie', for six weeks before his death Furtwangler discontinued the recording.

The 'Ring' from Rome has pride of place. Furtwangler at the time had ideal conditions for this radio production. The radio orchestra was supported by members of other orchestras, Furtwangler could commit more than a month to rehearsals, and the formidable work was recorded before a small audience, act by act to avoid overtaxing the soloists' voices. The result became legendary, firstly as the recording for legal reasons could only be published 25 years later, and secondly because it introduced a new generation of Wagner singers.
