A world of difference for women

WAS £13.00 £6.50

Product description

Beating poverty for good means giving people support beyond basics like food and water. It’s about breaking down the barriers that keep people poor. Getting more children into school. Making sure families can get the healthcare they need. Defending women’s rights – to things like land and earning an income. It all works. And it all starts with gifts like this one. Around the world today, you’re more likely to be poor if you’re a woman. But we’re working with communities to change that. We’re helping more women to earn a living, understand their rights and escape discrimination. We’re supporting more girls to get the education they deserve. And in Zimbabwe, we’re working with people like Paulina to challenge the attitudes that can stifle women’s potential – helping her family to beat poverty for good.

This gift supports our Investing in the Future (IN) projects.

This gift in action

A world of difference for women

Paulina lives with her husband Opheus and two children in Zimbabwe. After 20 years of marriage, Paulina was resigned to doing all of the unpaid care work in her home. She had no time for herself and couldn’t earn a living to build a better future. But then the couple got involved in Oxfam’s We-Care project, which showed them how much better life could be if they shared household jobs and childcare more fairly. They received a wood stove that made it easier for Opheus to cook and before long he was cooking so much – and so well – he even won a prize for it! Now Paulina is much happier and even has time to weave mats to sell. “Now that I am getting help from my husband I feel free,” she says. And because Paulina and Opheus are both earning money, they can send their children to school.
