A Complete and Universal English Dictionary by the Rev. James Barclay in Two Volumes

£199.99

Product description

Part-encyclopedias and part-gazetteers, Barclay's dictionaries, which were published in several editions by different publishers between 1782 and about 1850, also had sections on linguistics, ancient and modern history, and Latin and French quotations and phrases. This edition is undated but is post 1841 when the engraving of Canterbury Cathedral at the beginning of volume one was published. Henry Dewhurst, the reviser, was also the author of a book on whales and one on the oceanic inhabitants of the arctic regions.
Full brown calf leather with blind stamped decoration and gilt lining on the covers. The spine is divided into 5 sections; three are gilt decorated and the remaining two in red and black respectively carry the title and Volume number.
Volume I A-HYT ; a small area of loss at the top of the spine and a crack on the front side approx 1cm down. Scuffing and wear to the edges and corners. Marbled endpapers. Extensive speckling on the frontis (Canterbury Cathedral), Tissue guard and title page. Light/occasional speckling on the maps.
Volume II JAC-ZYT ; a small area of loss at the top of the spine and a closed crack approx 4cm down on the front side. The bottom of the spine is also damaged (chewed?) with an area of loss. Scuffing and wear to the edges and corners. Marbled endpapers with the paper cracking at the hinge. The hinge beneath is in good order. Light speckling on the frontis (Royal Exchange), and tissue guard while the title page has moderate speckling. One or two of the maps have moderate speckling, but most are better than Vol I.
These two volumes are in very good condition for their age. I cannot find any others for sale in a two volume edition.

Oxfam Books & Music Olney

Welcome to Oxfam Books And Music Olney, situated just off the market square in Stanley Court opposite the Co-op. Come and browse our extensive selection of books, music, DVDs, computer games and cards. In our shop you can discover a great range of material from the latest modern fiction to classic literature and vintage LPs. We are always happy to receive your donations of books or music, and you can choose to Gift Aid them to Oxfam. We might also be able to collect particularly large donations - just ask. We are always interested in hearing from people who wish to volunteer with us. Just pop in to collect an application form.

Could you help us by collecting donations from donors homes? Our shop receives many offers of generous donations that we have to turn down as we do not have volunteers able to collect. We would ask you to collect in your own car, at your convenience and reimburse your petrol costs. It might be a couple of times a month and would make a really big difference to our ability to make money.
