A Critical Pronouncing Dictionary, and Expositor of the English Language

£14.99

Product description

This is not the actual title of this book (since the title page is missing) but the title of one section. The book deals with the following main topics: "Rules to be observed by the NATIVES OF IRELAND, for attaining a just pronuniciation of English; Rules to be observed by the NATIVES OF SCOTLAND, for attaining a just pronuniciation of English"; "Rules to be observed by the Londoner"; Directions to foreigners; Principles of English pronunciation; A critical pronouncing dictionary; A key to the classical pronunciation of Greek, Latin, and Scripture proper names. The book as a whole is undated, though one section bears the date 1840.

Condition: The volume is in extremely poor condition, lacking covers (apart from the remains of a thin leather membrane) and title page. The binding is in an advanced state of disintegration and the textblock has many loose pages. The value of the book lies in its author's view of how the English language was pronounced in the first part of the nineteenth century and as a reflection of the English views regarding the less fortunate inhabitants of these islands - the Irish, Scots and Londoners.
