Book includes nearly 2000 engravings on wood taken from ancient originals and is illustrative of the industrial arts and social life of the Greeks and Romans.

Black cloth over boards. Front and rear boards are embossed. Rear board detached, front hinge cracking evident. At rear is a 24 page advertisement section for other publications by Longmans, including an index. Book is 756 pages, with an index of Greek and Latin words and a Classed Index of terms.

Book was deaccessioned from Sir John Soane's Museum and has Sir John Soane's bookplate on the front board - although it could not have belonged to Soane as the publication date was after his death.
