A Writer's Diary. Volume 1, 1873-76

£39.99 Out Of Stock

Product description

A Writer's Diary is a unique forum of encyclopaedic fictional and non-fictional genres. The work began as an ongoing column in another journal, but in 1876 Dostoyevsky was able to bring it out as a complete monthly publication with himself as editor, publisher and sole contributor. Thus it was published not only in periodicals but as a periodical. This radical format was matched by the extreme range of its contents. In a single frame it was to combine an astonishing variety of material. Furthermore, as he makes clear in the very first article of the Diary, he speaks to his readers, encouraging an open debate by responding to readers' letters and to critics, and by anticipating a reply, or a reaction, or providing one himself.

This is the first volume of a new translation of the Diary, previously unavailable in its entirety.

Good condition. Red cloth boards are clean with bumped corners and tail of spine. Pages are clean but with some edge marks. Binding is sound. Dust jacket is clean and undamaged and is protected by a plastic sleeve. Former library book with library stamps and marks (see photo).
