An Englishman in America 1785

£80.00

Product description

The Hunter-Rose Co., Limited, Toronto, Canada, 1933, First edition. Hardback, bound in maroon cloth with title in gilt on spine; 8vo., [ix] 232 pp., frontispiece portrait; no D/J. Book condition: Good, spine sunned and gilt faded, corners, and ends of spine, bumped and frayed, frontispiece detached, slight foxing.
In November of 1784 Joseph Hadfield left Greenwich aboard the American ship Montgomery bound for Yorktown, Virginia. His mission was the collection of debts owing the paternal firm by merchants in America since prior to the Revolutionary War. His visit occupied the best part of a year and took him through the United States and into Canada at a very interesting epoch less than two years after the close of the war. His introduction to the diary was written some time after a second visit in 1787; some of the NIagara narrative was written in 1818, but the remainder was jotted down with ink and goosequill as he sat in Colonial inns, French-Canadian poste houses or by camp fires on the wild shores of Lake Ontario.
