An Historical Tour in Monmouthshire: 2 Volumes

£100.00 Out Of Stock

Product description

Limited edition of 500 copies, this no 130. Matching two volume set.

1995 Facsimile of 1801 original including all the maps and plates of the original edition, plus a new introduction by Jeremy K. Knight, Inspector of Ancient Monuments with Cadw, Chairman of the Monmouthshire Antiquarian Association and a leading authority on the history and antiquities of his native county.

Archdeacon Coxe's Historical Tour in Monmouthshire was based on journeys he made through the county in 1789 and later years, accompanied by Sir Richard Colt Hoare of Stourhead, a talented artist whose drawings form the basis of dozens of engravings. which are such an important feature of the book. The result, which includes a folding map of the county, several town plans and numerous other illustrations, is far more than a mere 'Tour' such as other writers of South Wales produced. It is so thorough an account of Monmouthsire, its prehistoric and Roman antiquities, towns and villages, families and great houses, trade and industries, as to be more akin to the county history published for many English shires in this period.

Coxe's Monmouthshire remains an indispensable reference book for the Gwent historian: this reprint will make an ideal gift of permanent value for anyone interested in the county and its history.

Printed on high quality paper of an appropriate finish, bound in dark brown vinyl which is much tougher than cloth and cheaper than leather with gold lettering on the spine.
