Animals in Black and White Volume Three: The Larger Birds

£39.99 Out Of Stock

Product description

Animals in Black and White Volume Three: The Larger Birds published in 1928.

This is Volume Two in a series of six animal books each containing woodcuts of twenty animals. These volumes are something quite new in nature books. Both the woodcuts and the text are the work of Mr. Daglish, "first of all a naturalist...but also a considerable artist" (Times). The text, though written in simple language and in a way which should be easily understood by a child, is of definite informative value, conveying actual facts as to the appearance, character, habits, food and distribution of each animal. The woodcuts present their subjects in simple yet eloquent terms, showing the shape, the markings (where necessary), a typical attitude and general characteristics. "Mr. Daglish's work, says the observer, "is an example of specific knowledge filtered, as it were, through an artistic sensibility, and the result is an unqualified success." "His engraving is consummate, Variety, direction, quality of line and suggestion of colour are truly remarkable... No Chinese or Japanese craftsman ever attained to greater perfection." - Morning Post

Hardcover book in good condition. Comes with a dust jacket, although in fair condition with small tears here and there. The inside cover shows barely any signs of wear and the pages inside are still very clean with no markings. The book is in overall very good condition, especially considering its age.
