First edition of this pioneering French work printed in 1737, a classic of engineering, which constitutes practically the first scientific text-book on engineering and the first to apply integral calculus to technical and practical problems. It became the international standard-work for nearly 100 years. According to Rosenthal (Litt. d. Technologie, p. 209) the work was reprinted 12 times and thus with the best impressions of the plates are in the first edition.Volume 1 only of a four volume set, bound in full leather. The spine has been replaced at some time and has six raised bands with richly gilt compartments. Some wear to the boards and slight bumping to the corners. Engraved frontispiece probably showing the water workings of Versailles.margin with other engraved vignettes in the text. A few scattered brownspots, but clean, with broad margins and printed on good paper.Part 1 covers the mechanics of moving water and part 2 deals specifically with different types of mills.Part 1 has 276 pages with 18 pull out diagrams. Part 2 has111 pages with 26 pull out diagrams. There is also a list of contents.
