Two great emotional conflicts have disturbed European Civilisation, one between religion and science, the other between individualism and collectivism. After an examination of the essential values of Roman Catholicism, puritanism and scientific materialism, and also of liberal democracy, socialism, communism an attempt is made to integrate the truths embedded in these faiths. It is maintained that social well being is impossible unless most men recognise that something is absolutely good. A tentative description is given of the absolutely good thing.

Front board is detaching from spine, chipping to dust jacket at the base of the spine, dust jacket has edgewear particularly along the area covering the base of the front board, small areas of brown staining to front and rear board, foxing to page edges, vertical pencil marks parallel to the text throughout the book. Boards have discoloured to a light brown/off-white.
