Birket Foster’s Pictures of English Landscape

WAS £15.99 £7.99

Product description

Published in 1863. Engravings by the brothers Dalziel with poems/picutes in words by Tom Taylor. This book has been professionally repaired with the spine buckram renewed beneath the original external buckram layer, and new pastedowns 7 first/last free endpapers. The original mauve colour of the covers remains only on part of the rear board with the remainder having faded to a beige colour. However the extensive gilt stamping and decoration and titles are present on both boards and the spine; the boards have bevelled edges. Gilt page edges all round which has worn near the corners. A small owner bookplate has been stuck to the new front pastedown. There is foxing throughout, mainly in the page margins and on the reverse of the plates. There is a light damp stain in the bottom right corner of the Preface and the following six pages and other similar damp stains at the corners of a number of other text pages; none appear to encroach on the images or the text. The plates in this book are wood engravings by the Dalziel brothers of drawings by Birket Foster; the poems were written independently but are set to complement the illustrations.

Oxfam Bookshop Lymington

Lymington is on the South coast, bordering on the New Forest National Park which was created as a Royal Forest in 1079 by William the Conqueror, and first recorded as 'Nova Foresta' in the Doomsday Book in 1086. Our Oxfam Shop at 73, The High Street is in a lovely Georgian building, the tallest in Lymington. The elegant Georgian buildings lining the wide main street were built mostly for merchants in the local salt trade. The famous Saturday market brings the town to life with its variety of stalls. The area is renowned for outdoor pursuits, including camping, sailing, windsurfing, and surfing, as well as forest walks and horse riding.
