Carmina Juvenilia

£100.00

Product description

David Jacob van Lennep (1774–1853) was Professor of Classics at the University of Amsterdam and was a poet and writer. This book is a collection of his writing and was published in 1790. The introduction is by Richeus van Ommeren (also Professor of Classics at the University of Amsterdam.) There are 40 pages of writings, including the introduction, before the main body of work. All are written in Latin.

The book covers are decorated paper on card and are bumped and browned around edges; the spine has considerable wear with loss although much of the original title print can be seen. At some time an elastic band or twine has been wrapped around the centre of the book. The leaves are stitched and sown and this binding is sound although there are several page breaks. The print is pressed heavily into the soft paper leaves which are untrimmed on the leading and lower edges.

A rare item which could interest both Latin scholars and collectors.
