‘Cassell’s Household Guide to Every Department of Practical Life’, New & Revised Edition Vols I-IV published by Cassell, Petter & Galpin, London. Undated, but these volumes are identical to the 1881 edition with the exception of having green, rather than red, cloth covers. A compendium of information from the late Victorian era with advice on such subjects as pie and cake baking, maintaining and cleaning aquariums and the household guns, managing finances, false teeth, making wine and kites and calisthenics for ladies. Cloth covers with gilt stamped decoration and lettering to the front and spine and blind stamp to the back. Illustrated with monochrome test illustrations and eight colour plates. 1507 pp in total, each volume measures 19cm x 25cm.
Condition is good to very good for books of this age. The hard covers are a little bumped on the edges and corners but are unfaded. The book block edges are, as expected, soiled. The front cover of Vol II is becoming detached from the book block, the front endpaper has child’s scribble and the tissue guard for the frontispiece has become detached. Otherwise, the bindings are firm and tight in each volume. The inner pages of each volume are lightly tanned with only very occasional foxing. Text is perfectly readable throughout.
