Christine's Picture Book 1st thus edition

£8.99 Out Of Stock

Product description

Christine's Picture Book by Hans Christian Andersen and Grandfather Drewsen. 1st thus edition published by Kingfisher Books 1984. Hardback. with dust jacket. Jacket is worn and faded. Otherwise very clean and bright. Dark blue cloth boards with colour pictorial inlay. Gilt title to spine, and marbled endpapers.

Grandfather Drewsen gave a pictorial scrapbook book to his three year old granddaughter Christine Stampe for her birthday. Assembled using more than a thousand illustrations cut from French picture-sheets, German magazines, and Danish newspapers the whole is massively greater than the sum of its parts. This endeavour was assisted by Drewsen's friend Hans Christian Andersen, who was a gifted graphic artist. Andersen also added verses throughout the book. The scrapbook they created has been reproduced as exactly as possible, with the addition of an English translation of the verses, and with a background essay and notes by the Danish scholar Dr Erik Dal. The skills of the modern paper-maker, photographer and colour printer have been combined to bring to life a beautiful family treasure from the nineteenth century for the delight of families today. Translation by Brian Alderson who has also written a study of the history of Andersen's fairy tales in Britain.
