Comus

£155.00 Out Of Stock

Product description

Comus - John Milton - Arthur Rackham Illustrated

London. William Heinemann. First thus edition, early 1920s. pp76.

Heavy green cloth boards with some manufacturing defect spotting on front board. Fine gilt decoration of Gothic beasties. Spine is sunned and there is a little wobbling; light fraying at ends. Very nice paste downs with erotic silhouettes of dancing girls and goblins.
Extensive cracking to some inner sections but the block remains strongly intact. All pages tanned. Owner book plate to front endpaper, and rear endpaper has the remnants of an attempt to erase some pencil marks.

The baffling layout to the book, and its page numbering, is lost to the sea of wonderful paintings and imagery. Actual page count is well past 130.
This ode by Milton, in the spirit of Edgar Allan Poe where thy footstep gleams, is supported by 25 coloured and sepia plates and various small drawings.

Excellent book an a highly unusual style.

Oxfam Bookshop Market Harborough

Oxfam is the UK's largest second hand bookseller. Oxfam bookshops offer a wider selection of books than most shops, from modern fiction and leisure interest to more specialist subjects, classics, and rare or collectable books. We also stock an attractive range of greetings cards and a good selection of stationery. Come and browse!

Could you help us by collecting donations from donors homes? Our shop receives many offers of generous donations that we have to turn down as we do not have volunteers able to collect. We would ask you to collect in your own car, at your convenience and reimburse your petrol costs. It might be a couple of times a month and would make a really big difference to our ability to make money.
