Crinoline in our Parks and Promenades from 1710 to 1864

£30.00 Out Of Stock

Product description

This fascinating collection of fashion plates covering a 150-year period in English history appeared in the mid-19th century, its publisher's aim being to show how the size of ladies' skirts had ballooned over time to an idiotic stage before shrinking again to something more akin to their current form of dress. It presents an interesting overview of female fashion through the 18th and 19th centuries.

Our copy is in its original cover of dark green-grey embossed cloth with wide double impressed panel borders enclosing the title etc in large gilt letters on the front. Considering its venerable age, the cover is in good general condition, though somewhat grubby and softened at edges and corners. All page edges are gilt. The book evidently suffered some water damage at some stage, particularly affecting the bottom of the back cover, and some of the pages adjacent, but without affecting the engravings themselves. Binding is weak, but just holding, and there are no loose pages. Pastedowns have printed advertisements, and both sides of the feps are similarly adorned. Text throughout uses 'f' for 's', making it a little difficult to read at times. Each engraving has an explanatory text in a decoratively-bordered panel on the opposing page.
