Title: Salvador Dali 1904 - 1989
The Paintings 1904 - 1946
Authors: Robert Descharnes, Gilles Neret
How did Dali the paintings come about. At the outset, things did not look good. Dali had doubtless drawn upon the systematic confusion in which he lived as a lifelong source of inspiration; but for those who came after, trying to make sense of it all was distinctley unhelpful. Dali had confounded the dates and titles of his work as utterly as he had the tales that he told about his life. Robert descharnes, who was Dali's companion for almost forty years and is better placed than anyone to present the artist's complete work, points out that this is the first study of Dali to include all known paintings, with only a very few exceptions. The book is not mereley a catalogue raisonne, though. The reproductions are accompanied by drawings, writings and other documents, and work Dali did in film, fashion, objects d'art, and other areas. Without these "crutches", the paintings would perhaps be no more than a series of pictures. Robert Descharnes' intimate knowledge derived partly from Dali himself and partly from vast archive material collected over the years. Some of the paintings not reproduced here have been deliberately excluded because their authenticity is in question or they were repudiated by the artist himself.
Dali: the paintings was produced by three people: Robert Descharnes, Gilles Neret and Nicolas Descharnes. Neret, a Dali lover since 1964, was responsible for the overall orchestration of the book, principally through his layout work. Nicolas Descharnes, Robert's son, gave Gilles Neret unfailing assistance, drawing on his own knowledge of the archives to locate the aptest documentary material.
