David Copperfield (plus 7 other titles)

£85.00

Product description

Eight titles, in seven volumes, of Dickens Works, from the Charles Dickens Edition, published by Chapman and Hall. The volumes are undated, although are believed to be from around 1870 (there is a postscript by Dickens at the rear of Martin Chuzzlewit which is dated May 1868). The volumes are as follows: The Personal History of David Copperfield - 533 pages, with frontispiece and 8 illustrations; The Life and Adventures of Martin Chuzzlewit - 522 pages, with frontispiece and 7 illustrations, plus 4 page postscript; Dombey and Son - 543 pages, with frontispiece and 7 illustrations; Barnaby Rudge - 391 pages, with frontispiece and 7 illustrations, combined with The Uncommercial Traveller - 172 pages, with frontispiece and 3 illustrations; The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club - 497 pages, with frontispiece and 7 illustrations; Bleak House - 540 pages, with frontispiece and 7 illustrations; and The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby - 515 pages, with frontispiece and 7 illustrations. All volumes are bound in half leather, with marbled boards. The spines have raised bands, one compartment containing "Dickens's Works" in gilt on red leather (missing on Nicholas Nickleby), another compartment with the title in gilt on black leather (missing on Nicholas Nickleby and Martin Chuzzlewit) and with faded gilt decoration to the remaining compartments. There is significant rubbing and wear to the leather, with chipping to the head and/or tail of some volumes and major damage to the lower compartment of the spine of Bleak House. Internally, all volumes (other than The Pickwick Papers (which has had tape repairs to the front and rear hinges) and Barnaby Rudge/The Uncommercial Traveller) have several split and/or weakened hinges. All volumes have marbled endpapers, age-toned pages, some staining/foxing throughout. In Nicholas Nickleby, the spine and rear board are almost detached, and pages 287/8 and the illustration opposite page 289 are loose. The last leaf (pages 171/2) of The Uncommercial Traveller is loose, and chipped around the edges. These volumes maybe present a re-binding opportunity.
