Doddridge's Family Expositor: or, a Paraphrase and Version of the New Testament:

£450.00

Product description

Doddridge's Family Expositor: or, a Paraphrase and Version of the New Testament:
with Critical Notes and a Practical Improvement of each Section. P. Doddridge, D.D.
Edited by J. Orton.

Complete six volume set, half bound in tan calf with six panels to spine, four of which are decorated with gilt flowers and two with maroon leather and gilt titles. The ribs are finely embellished in gilt. Faces in marbled olive card. Corners bruised and edges inevitably worn by time and circumstance. The calfskin is beginning to crack in places: the binding string is clearly visible in vol II; the rear board of vol I is held in place solely by one string.

Top edges colour washed: possibly in green, now fading to grey. All edges planed, the fore edges are sculpted. pp 438 - 679 plus prolific end matter. 3,449 numbered pages in total. The only marks observed appear to be some ancient Indian ink doodlings on one page of end paper of vol IV.
A listing of the cuts appears in vol VI, with directions to the Bookbinder as to where they were to position them. The binder has ignored the advice on at least one occasion and placed the Revelation of St. John at p426 instead of p435. Ninety-four engravings in all. Some of the end papers have been torn out or otherwise damaged in vols I and III.

All volumes are printed on parchment, now tanned into respectable old age and littered with pleasing colophons and scatterings of Greek. No foxing seen. Dedication to H.R.H. The Princess of Wales.

This is a rare title to appear as a full set. It was published over a period of fifteen years or so up to 1762. the preface to vol I is dated 1738. Later volumes were possibly added that did not form part of this original set. The rear end papers of vol VI contain the end matter and index.

Oxfam Bookshop Market Harborough

Oxfam is the UK's largest second hand bookseller. Oxfam bookshops offer a wider selection of books than most shops, from modern fiction and leisure interest to more specialist subjects, classics, and rare or collectable books. We also stock an attractive range of greetings cards and a good selection of stationery. Come and browse!

Could you help us by collecting donations from donors homes? Our shop receives many offers of generous donations that we have to turn down as we do not have volunteers able to collect. We would ask you to collect in your own car, at your convenience and reimburse your petrol costs. It might be a couple of times a month and would make a really big difference to our ability to make money.
