Egypt Past and Present

£55.00

Product description

The ambition of this book is considerable, offering the reader a complete history of Egypt from its earliest days, long before the Greek or Roman empires, up to the construction of the Suez Canal (completed in 1864). Covering the whole range of history, geography, the natural world, geology, art and culture, this is indeed a compendium of information about a land which remains a fascinating topic of study.

William Henry Davenport Adams (1828–1891), was an English writer and journalist of the 19th century, who published widely on a variety of subjects. His voluminous compilations, numbering nearly 140 in all, include a number of useful translations from the French of L. Figuier, J. C. F. Hoefer, A. Mangin, Jules Michelet, and B. H. Révoil.

Our book, evidently either a school prize (though there is no confirmatory label pasted in) or part of a school library, is in very nice condition for its age, handsomely bound in full tree calf, with gilt decorative borders to front and back, a gilt school shield on the front, 5 raised bands on the spine with gilt decorated panels, title etc in gilt letters on a maroon leather inset to the second panel. The exterior is in very nice condition for its age, with some rubbing to the raised bands and spine generally, a little wear to corners, and front cover only held by the upper string binding. One dark spot on the front cover. Textblock edges all marbled. Marbled endpapers - front one split down spine angle. Previous owner's name on blank side of frontispiece. Apart from the loose front cover, the binding is firm, and all pages clean and bright. Many illustrations enhance the text.
