English-Italian Dictionary. 1771. G.Baretti.

£100.00

Product description

Giuseppe Marc'Antonio Baretti (1719 – 1789) was an Italian literary critic, poet, writer, translator, linguist and author of two influential language-translation dictionaries. Baretti's life was marked by controversies, to the point that he had to leave Italy, for England, where he remained for the rest of his life. For many years he led a wandering life, supporting himself chiefly by his writings. At length he arrived in London, where he remained for the remainder of his life (when not travelling). He was appointed Secretary to the Royal Academy of Arts, and became acquainted with Samuel Johnson, Garrick and others of that society. (Thanks Wikipedia.)

This is a 1771 new edition of volume 2 of his English/Italian dictionary, first being 1760. This being the English into Italian volume. Title page and preface in Italian, then a 40 page "Grammar of the Italian Tongue", in English. Printed for W.Strahan; J.and F. Rivington; W,Johnston; Hawes, Clarke and Collins; W.Owen; G.Keith; S.Crowder; T.Longman; B.Law; T.Davies; T. Becket & Co.; Wilson and Nicol; J.Almon; Robinson and Roberts; T. Cadell and P.Elmsley.

For its age, very good condition. Possibly a later rebinding, in some sort of animal skin. There is some wear, marks to the back cover being the worst. All lightly browned. Very faint spots/marks throughout. Complete and all completely legible.

Included is a loose handwritten piece of paper, which appears to be someone writing out some of the grammatical rules, in tiny and what must be 18th. century script (see photo.)

Courier delivery, signature required.

Also for sale on this site is a copy of the 1760 Italian into English volume one, by the same author.
