Fairy Tales

£300.00

Product description

By Hans Christian Andersen. 1872. Sampson, Low et al publishers. Translated by H.L. D. Ward and Augusta Plesner.

vi, [2],94,[2] pages. Small folio. Illustrated with coloured frontispiece and 11 coloured plates after original drawings by E. V. B. (Eleanor Vere Boyle.). Printed at the Chiswick Press, the plates printed by Leighton Brothers. Bound in original decorative maroon/red cloth with black and gilt designs. Edges bevelled, show shelf wear and corners are bumped. All page edges are gilt. The gilt on the cloth is slightly faded, and the spine has been expertly replaced; front inner hinge is cracking. One plate (King and dumb maiden) has small chip in fore-edge; some minor dust marks to pages. Tanning to page edges and sporadic foxing. Pencil notation indicating all plates present and inventory number on front end paper and some occasional pencil marks throughout. Transfer from plates to tissue guards evident. Otherwise a very nice clean copy. The illustrations to the book clearly demonstrate the influence of the Pre-Raphaelite movement on Boyle's artwork. One of Boyle's finest creations and is always rare in any condition.
