Published 1883 in 4 volumes by Cassell & Co. Hardback. Brown board covers with gilt lettering and decoration on spine. Marbled edges and end papers. Corners bumped and edges worn in places. Some volumes are slightly bowed. Inside papers are age-tanned. Binding is secure except in volume 3 where two pages are loose.

Profusely illustrated throughout with 148 (37 per volume, incl` the egg`s plate) beautiful chromolithographs by A. Thorburn and by Eliza Turck etc and with the plate detailing various eggs to each volume by R. Kearton. Also illustrated with charming, detailed chapter head and tail vignettes for each bird..

Volume I dated 1883, the rest are undated but are presumed to be the first printings running up to 1888.

Owner's nameplate pasted inside front covers.

This set is a marvellous collector's item for any true bird enthusiast.
