First published in France in 1949 ('Pour un Herbier'), this is a first UK edition, first impression published in 1959. Some edge wear and a couple of short closed tears to top and bottom of jacket and spine, spine slightly browned, not price clipped (13s 6d), no inscriptions, printed label with printing details pasted to copyright page, internally clean tight and square. French author and woman of letters Colette's (1873-1954), 'window open on life' embraced many things, not least of them the flowers she loved. Here is a collection of pieces about flowers, exquisite in phrase, sensitive in descriptive appreciation, and curiously informed, almost scientifically, as to the properties, minutiae, terminology and uses of a varied assortment of flowers. But there is more here than flowers. One gets vignettes of phases of her life, her childhood, her mother, the people of the country village she loved, an old laundress and embroiderer who knew about medicinal herbs, bits about food, flashes of fantasy, thoughts about writers. Enhanced by watercolors by Edouard Manet (1832-83).
