Friendship: Two Essays on Friendship

£24.99

Product description

This charming little book contains "An essay on friendship" by Ralph Waldo Emerson and "Laelius; or an essay on friendship" by Marcus Tullius Cicero.

Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882) was an American essayist, lecturer, philosopher and poet who led the transcendentalist movement of the mid-19th century. He was seen as a champion of individualism and a prescient critic of the countervailing pressures of society, and he disseminated his thoughts through dozens of published essays and more than 1,500 public lectures across the United States.

Marcus Tullius Cicero (106–43 BCE) was a Roman statesman, orator, lawyer and philosopher from a wealthy municipal family of the Roman equestrian order, and is considered one of Rome's greatest orators and prose stylists.

Our book is in very nice condition with few external signs of wear or use. Bound in green cloth with gilt 'art nouveau' floral and filigree designs, gilt lettering and infill on the front cover and spine and embossed on the back. Top page edges gilt. Many pages uncut. Endpapers illustrated with thistle design. Decorated title page in black and red. Inside the binding is firm with no loose pages; pages generally clean; some minimal foxing, and tanning to the 2 middle pages. Previous owner's signature on front pastedown and an inscription on the half title page. A few pencil markings and marginalia. Contemporary bookseller's label states " W.B. Clarke Co. Park St. Church Boston". A beautiful item.
