Gao Brothers, Portraits

£9.99

Product description

Paperback, Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art. Since the 1980's, The Gao Brothers have avoided pursuing fashionable trends. The Gao Brothers and other artists engaged in such trends have been affected by the changing realities of China and the impact of globalisation. Meanwhile, the Gao Brothers have stuck to their maverick position, taking advantage of it to refine the particularity and complexity of their art. Post-modernist theory has affected the Gao Brothers' art because there is no taboos regarding the materials and methods they use to accomplish their work. Nevertheless the spirit of the Gao Brothers is consistent with what the pioneers of modernism held. This kind of artistic phenomenon can be seen as a reflection of the particular reality of China. Both the rapid development of the economy and integration through globalisation are forging ahead under china's one-party political system, which further complicates the Chinese reality, and the art of the Gao Brothers is perfect evidence of this complexity. Their art has prompted people to realise that society is constantly changing, and drawn them to reflect on the fact that many issues affecting the present and future of the nation have not yet been resolved. There are a number of fundamental problems still hanging over China that have a crucial influence on the fate of the country.
