General Zoology or Systematic Natural History, vol VIII part I

£19.99

Product description

General Zoology or Systematic Natural History, vol VIII part I - George Shaw
London. Published by George Kearsley and other proprietors (eighteen of them). pp 357.

Very attractive calf board to rear but the front board has been lost and the spine is perished very badly. Seven gilt bands still visible, along with three rosette designs and nice decoration to tail. This was once a very handsome book.
One or more of the prelimerary pages have been lost and this book begins with the title page:
General Zoology or Systematic Natural history by George Shaw M.D.F.R.S &c. with plates from the first authorities and most select specimens. Engraved principally by Mrs. Griffith. Vol VIII. Part I. Aves.

Tucked into the second title page is a fossilised leather title plate: "Aves Picae". This has clearly been at home here for a very long time judging by the chemical state of the surrounding paper but it probably belongs to the spine of a completely different book and was put in here by an uncaring house servant or similar. (Aves Picae refers to the magpie family but this book contains groups as diverse as creepers and hummingbirds.)
The author left instructions for the positioning of each of the 45 plates. The engravings are b/w faded to sepia but still magnificent. The whole text is delightfully tanned and foxed.

Bindings are nice and tight despite the absence of front board etc and the paper is of high grade cloth of great strength.
This title is number eight of sixteen in the set - a work of great dedication by one of the founders of the Natural History Museum.
Author died a year after publication.

The book has a fine pedigree but is sadly spoilt by the lack of front matter.

Oxfam Bookshop Market Harborough

Oxfam is the UK's largest second hand bookseller. Oxfam bookshops offer a wider selection of books than most shops, from modern fiction and leisure interest to more specialist subjects, classics, and rare or collectable books. We also stock an attractive range of greetings cards and a good selection of stationery. Come and browse!

Could you help us by collecting donations from donors homes? Our shop receives many offers of generous donations that we have to turn down as we do not have volunteers able to collect. We would ask you to collect in your own car, at your convenience and reimburse your petrol costs. It might be a couple of times a month and would make a really big difference to our ability to make money.
