Geoffrey the Knight, Illustrated by Gustave Doré [1869]

£250.00

Product description

Geoffrey the Knight: A Tale of Chivalry of the Days of King Arthur. With twenty whole-page engravings by Gustave Doré.

Hardback with brown boards, gilt decoration on front and spine, gilt page ends, and dark brown endpapers. Published by T Nelson and Sons, 1869.

The book appears to be an English translation of ‘Les Aventures du chevalier Jaufré et de la belle Brunissende’, published in 1856, by Jean-Bernard Mary-Lafon (1812-1884). Its major attraction is of course not the story but the illustrations by Gustave Doré.

Paul Gustave Louis Christophe Doré (1832-1883) was a French painter and illustrator who worked mainly with wood engravings. He illustrated books by Rabelais, Cervantes, Byron and Dante, and in 1866 a new edition of the Bible with his illustrations was published to great acclaim.

Hardback, no dust jacket. Covers rubbed and bumped, cocked, with some fraying of cloth, but gilt is still bright. Binding cracked at hinges. Bookseller’s label on front pastedown.

This book will be sent by courier.
