Godowsky: The Pianists’ Pianist

£12.99

Product description

A biography of Leopold Godowsky. Hardback with dust jacket. By Jeremy Nicholas, with a foreword by Jorge Bolet. Published by Appian Publications and Recordings. First edition, 1989. Includes black and white illustrations and photographs.

'Godowsky: The Pianists’ Pianist' must rank among the most intimate and comprehensive portraits of a major figure from a phenomenal era in the history of piano playing.

Leopold Godowsky (1870-1938) was one of the greatest pianists who ever lived. During the first quarter of the twentieth century his name was synonymous with the piano. Many consider certain aspects of his playing to be unsurpassed to this day, while Godowsky the composer wrote some of the most complex music for the piano yet conceived, works which expanded the potential of the keyboard. His friend Sergei Rachmaninov wrote: “Godowsky is the only musician of this age who had given a lasting, a real contribution to the development of piano music “.

This, the first study of this remarkable musician’s life and work, was the result of ten years research. It was written with the full approval and co-operation of the Godowsky family who have given Jeremy Nicholas sole access to their archives.

Hardback with unclipped dustjacket. Some minor marks to jacket and page ends, and an erased pencil mark on front endpaper, but pages are bright and appear unmarked.
