Handbook of the Territory of Papua

£24.99

Product description

A general guide to that part of the island of New Guinea known as Papua, annexed to the British Crown in 1888, including descriptions of its geography, governance and judicial arrangements, society and economic (particularly agricultural) affairs. It is believed that the first edition of this handbook was published in 1907, and this second edition brings the book's contents up to date to the 30th June 1909. Cream paper boards with black titling to front board, bound with a green leather spine strip. The boards are heavily stained/foxed with some edgewear and wear to the corners. There is heavy staining to the spine. The name and address of a previous owner, and date (1912), appear in ink to the front pastedown. An Addendum dated 4th December 1909 has been glued to the front free end paper, and two lines of the Addendum have been crossed through in red ink. The book is bound by three staples, which are rusty. There is light foxing to the page edges, also to the preliminaries, to a few pages of text, and to the last few pages, but the text block is otherwise tight and clean. A colour fold-out map of the Territory of Papua is in a pocket taped to the rear pastedown. There is some foxing to the map, and a small closed tear which affects four folds when the map is unfolded. A rare volume of this early edition with its hardback covers, in overall good condition.
