Heinrich Heine's Pictures of Travel [1876]

£24.99

Product description

Translated from the German by Charles Godfrey Leland and published in this edition on 1876 by Schaefer & Koradi, Philadelphia. Illustrated frontispiece, A mix of poetry and prose, this is a fascinating account of travel and life in Europe in the nineteenth century.

Christian Johann Heinrich Heine (1797 – 1856) was a German poet, journalist, essayist, and literary critic. He is best known outside of Germany for his early lyric poetry, which was set to music in the form of Lieder (art songs) by composers such as Robert Schumann and Franz Schubert. Heine's later verse and prose are distinguished by their satirical wit and irony. He is considered part of the Young Germany movement. His radical political views led to many of his works being banned by German authorities. Heine spent the last 25 years of his life as an expatriate in Paris.

There is an inscription in the front reading: 'Alice Gunning, Oct. 1877, from her loving 'Herr'..

The cover is fairly worn and marked, with frayed corners and top & bottom of the spine. The internal pages are yellowed but are in generally in a good clean condition. The binding is a bit weak, although holding together with no pages missing.
