This comprehensive and detailed volume provides the interested reader with every possible detail of the life of this famous French writer, as well as information about his writings, and was therefore published in 2 volumes, of which this is the first. One does, however, need to be a fluent French speaker/reader in order to appreciate it!
No details could be found of the author, beyond the description given on the title page: 'Decorated Captain, and member of many literary and 'savant' societies' (rough translation).
Our copy is in remarkably good condition given its age, fully bound in mottled dark leather with a decorative gilt-tooled border to front and back, and title in gilt letters on a black panel on the highly gilt-decorated spine. The covers are generally age-worn, but the gilt remains surprisingly bright, and there is no frank damage externally. Inside, the dark marbled endpapers are undamaged apart from a small white area on the front fep. A prize label is pasted inside the front cover, and dated 1832. All textblock edges are marbled. The binding is tight with no loose pages; all pages clean and bright apart from the final few, which are a little marked with ?foxing spots. Folding frontispiece of portraits of Voltaire is intact, as are the four folded replicas of the writer's own letters to 'Sire' (possibly the Dauphin, or even the King). A remarkable survivor.
