History of Plymouth from the Earliest Period to the Present Time.

£19.99

Product description

Unfortunately this book is in poor condition, in need of a full rebind. The spine is missing, the boards all but detached - both held on by a few threads - and the rear free endpaper is completely detached, but present. Would make an excellent book-binding project as once rebound or carefully repaired this would be a wonderful addition to any local Devon/Plymouth historian's library, as the contents are actually in good+ condition: very little spotting apart from to the first and last few pages, pages clean and fairly fresh for their age. Profusely illustrated and fascinating to read the history of Plymouth before both wars. This book was first published in 1872 and this 1890 edition, according to the Preface, is "essentially a new work. Partly as a result of the appearance of a complete new history of the old town; partly in consequence of continued research; and partly owing to fortunate accidents which have brought to light sources of information lost for centuries, the materials for the history of Plymouth are far bulkier and more trustworthy now than they were twenty years ago. [...] Hence floods of light have been thrown upon some of the most obscure points of local history, correcting many errors due to imperfect information, and filling in the details of many a picture hitherto sketched in faintest outline. [...] The result is given in the present volume, mainly re-written, twice the size of its predecessor". This New Edition is now far scarcer than the 1871 shorter history of the city.
