History of the German Struggle for Liberty In Two Volumes

£49.00

Product description

Fascinating black cloth first edition two volume set containing numerous black and white drawings by R. Caton Woodville and other maps and portraits. This edition, unlike other versions is very rare as it was published by the short-lived transatlantic company Osgood McIlvaine & Co, a company with links to Mark Twain and Thomas Hardy, amongst others. The books provide a "detailed history of the struggle between Napoleon and his French army and Prussia, chronicling the fighting at Jena in 1806, as well as the commencement of fighting 1813 upon Napoleon's taking refuge in Prussia upon his failures in Moscow...
Both books are in good condition for their age. The cloth boards have gilt lettering to the spine and front, which also has a gilt and white decoration. The boards of both are scuffed from shelf wear with a few scratches and other marks. Inside, there is some foxing to the endpapers, which also have a beautifully written signature of prior ownership. The rest of the pages are tanned with age but otherwise clean. The pages are uncut with the outside upper edges dirty from dust, and the binding is tight.
