Hooker's Ecclesiastical Polity (3-volumes) (1807)

£90.00 Out Of Stock

Product description

Full Title:
The Works of that Learned and Judicious Divine Mr Richard Hooker containing Eight Books of the Laws of Ecclesiastical Polity and Several Other Treatises ; with an Index to the Whole to which is prefixed The Life of the Author by Isaac Walton.

All three volumes have the date MDCCCVII on the full title page.

Richard Hooker (1554 – 1600) was an English priest in the Church of England and an influential theologian. He was one of the most important English theologians of the sixteenth century.

Of the Lawes of Ecclesiastical Politie is Hooker's best-known work, with the first four books being published in 1594. The fifth was published in 1597, while the final three were published posthumously, and indeed may not all be his own work. Structurally, the work is a carefully worked out reply to the general principles of Puritanism as found in The Admonition and Thomas Cartwright's follow-up writings.

Volume The First: 509 pages
Volume The Second: 501 pages
Volume The Third: 597 pages plus Index

All three volumes have leather binding with gilt decoration around the edges of the front and back covers and gilt text and decoration on the spine. The page ends are speckled.

The covers of all three volumes show rubbing and bumping. On volume three, the bottom third of the spine is missing as well as as a portion at the top of the spine. There is a name written on the front free end paper of Volume 1 and on the inside of the front cover of Volume 2. On all 3 volumes, there is light foxing to the front and back free- and paste-down end papers and the title pages. There is the odd spot of foxing to some of the internal pages and the odd annotation in pencil on a few of the pages.. The binding is firm for all three volumes.
