Product description

Published by G. Bell & Sons, London in 1957, this first edition is in a good, used condition. The dustjacket has been priceclipped and is very rubbed along the top edge. It is also marked and discoloured, particularly on the back. The blue cloth boards are in a good condition, only a little dusty along the top edge. The spine is gilt-stamped. The page block is yellowing throughout and all edges are spotted. The volume is illustrated by arresting black & white photographs of the huskies, the team at work, the antarctic station, and emperor penguins.

The author was the sled dog handler and trainer for the Australian National Antarctic Research Expedition. It is a splendid account of an adventurous year. The author had three teams of huskies in his care. He trained them and they trained him. The characters of the individual dogs are drawn clearly and there is much about the expedition's study of the birds, seals and penguins. There are also brilliant descriptions of the scene, weather and an account of an epic journey across the sea ice in the appalling conditions.

Oxfam Bookshop Hexham

We relocated in January 2016 to larger premises and are now able to offer a wider range of books and music (you can come and check out your musical choices in our listening booth and also find out a lot more about Oxfam's work.). We have a new local interest section, more space for history and have extended our craft and arts offer.  We also sell cards, fair trade food and ethical cleaning and beauty products.

Hexham is a market town situated in the beautiful Tyne Valley - the ideal stopping off point before exploring Hadrian's Wall, Chesters, Housesteads and the Temple of Mithras at Carrawburgh.
