Independence and Exegesis

£19.99

Product description

Ex Libris copy.

Dust cover present, slightly worn on edges and corners. Otherwise copy clean and in good condition. All pages tight and secure.

This book investigates the 'independent' French tradition in the study of Christian origins. This is traced to Ernest Renan and also to academic and ecclesiastical factors markedly different from those prevailing in Germany and England. A close study is made of its three outstanding representatives in the earlier part of the twentieth century. Loisy is well-known as the 'father of Modernism' but here the emphasis falls on his historical work on the New Testament texts. Use is made of his unpublished papers. This is also the case for Giugnebert, who taught the early Christian period at the Sorbonne. Goguel is included because of his conscious stance as 'historian' rather than 'theologian'. All three critics were motivated by varying degrees of anti-theological sentiment, but they occupied middle ground between the extremes of Catholicism and anti-Catholicism in France. There is a substantial measure of agreement in their historical conclusions. They concur in viewing early Christianity as an example of how a religion is born.
