£120.00

Product description

Ernest Brown & Phillips - The Leicester Galleries 1916. Rare small softback with card covers in good overall condition - some foxing to covers and wear/tear to edges. Back top left of cover is missing (see photo). Some light foxing to pages - binding is tight.

ITALIAN ARTISTS AND THE WAR – EXHIBITION CATALOGUE LEICESTER GALLERIES 1916
A rare item. In 1902 Cecil and Wilfred Phillips established their art gallery. They were joined in 1903 by Ernest Brown and began to trade as the Leicester Galleries. Every exhibition was accompanied by a catalogue, often with an introduction by a leading literary figure.
In June – July 1916 this special exhibition was mounted to show and support the work of Italian artists who in the First World War “described with pen, pencil and brush the glory and horror of this cruel conflict” in their support of the Allies.
The catalogue contains an introduction in by Salvatore Barzilai, a founder member of the Italian Republican Party. It is to be found listed in Ernest Brown and Phillips’ Official Index of Catalogues. It lists all exhibits and includes ten illustrations of pictures by leading artists whose work demonstrates their violent opposition to their German foes.
