Jeanne d'Arc [text in French]

£24.99

Product description

This delightful children's book tells the story of Joan of Arc, and is clearly aimed at young people of perhaps 10 years and upwards, the text being quite 'grown-up' in style. The illustrations are numerous and in a fine-drawn style showing the influence of the 2 late medieval painters Fra Angelico and Paolo Uccello. Although much admired by critics, they were unsatisfactory in the artist's own eyes, having been reproduced by zincotype, a then-new photoengraving process. There are also signs of influence from Japanese art.

Louis-Maurice Boutet de Monvel (1850–1913) was a French painter and illustrator best known for his watercolours for children's books. He was a major figure in 19th-century children's book illustration, and considered to be as expert as Kate Greenaway.

Our copy is in good condition for its age, bound in cream cloth with green & gilt decoration to all external surfaces, slightly worn generally. Some staining and general grubbiness consistent with age. Inside, the sewn binding is holding with no loose pages, but some points of weakness. Pale blue endpapers slightly faded at edges & spine angle. Possible missing half-title page. Otherwise all pages clean and clear with very slight fading generally. No foxing. Publisher's label and cancelled price sticker inside front cover at the top corner.
