Jill Furse: her nature and her poems 1915 - 1944

£29.99

Product description

First published in July 1945 in a limited run of 150 copies, this copy is from a second run of 100, published December 1945 by The Chiswick Press. This is copy number 42 from that second run of 100 copies. Hardback. Green boards with gilt lettering on front and spine. No dust jacket. Contains three black & white plates with photos of the actress.

Structure sound. binding and text block tight, content clear and bright throughout. Slightly age-tanned but no marks to any of the internal pages. Considering its age, a very nice copy and has been well kept.

"Anyone who met Jill for the first time in her poems," writes Whistler in his introductory essay, "would form a strange idea of her. That is because her soul was greater than her talent in this direction, and verse could never have become for her, what living and acting already were, a big enough vehicle for abundance of spirit." Laurence Whistler married the actress Jill Furse in 1939; she died five years later, aged 29. In 1964 he commemorated her in his book The Initials in the Heart; in 1950 he married her younger sister Theresa.
