Johnny Balloon in America

£195.00

Product description

Johnny was not a child's party balloon, but a humanized version of one of the giant, grey, anti-air-raid balloons tethered on steel cables above important sites in London and around the country during World War II, intended to make low flying hazardous for the enemy. There is not much evidence that they prevented any air raids but may have given the citizens beneath a sense of security. This appears to be an extremely rare children's book, a companion to the earlier "Johnny Balloon." In this 2nd story, Johnny flies off to America with the children Julia and Noddy and Johnny becomes over indulged by the kind Americans and becomes rather badly behaved. They become involved in a gangster plot and eventually escape to return to England. Illustrated by Jacynth Ellerton.
Very scarce. Small rips to spine at bottom and top. 1943 edition.
