Kingdom of Ife

£20.00

Product description

Synopsis:
Kingdom of Ife: sculptures from West Africa presents a major part of the extraordinary corpus of early Ife art, with its hundreds of terracotta, stone and metal sculptures mostly dating from the twelfth to the fifteenth centuries. Artists at Ife, an early city-state in West Africa (located in present-day southwestern Nigeria), created art works that rank among the most aesthetically striking and technically sophisticated in the world. Published to accompany a major exhibition at the British Museum, Kingdom of Ife reveals the impressive diversity of Ife art through a range of objects, including handsome idealized portrait heads, exquisite miniatures, expressive caricatures, lively animals and sculptures showing the magnificent regalia worn by Ife's kings and queens. Together, these illuminate one of the world's greatest centres of cultural activity and demonstrate the technological virtuosity of Ife artists, who used pure copper to make human figures and freestanding heads.
