A French language publication, written by Owen Jones, an architect involved in the decorations for the great exhibition in 1851 and subsequently for the Crystal Palace.
Published by Florilege, undated, with 112 full page illustrations. Originally published in 1856, this is an encyclopaedic reference book of decorative styles from around the world and from different periods. The illustrations of the ornamental motifs, were produced by Owen Jones and his pupils using museum specimens and other published designs.
The book includes sections on the Middle East in the chapters on Arabian, Turkish, Moresque (Alhambra) and Persian ornament. The final chapter looks at how nature underpins the design of ornament around the world.
In good used condition, bound in blue cloth with gold design. Sunning along bottom edge of boards, some minor shelf wear to edges of boards.. Dust jacket in good condition, with scuffing and small tears to edges. One larger tear at top front corner. Binding good and tight but slightly cocked, pages clean and bright.
