This book has Volume One on the spine, and has forty-four superb steel engravings of Landseer's works, but on the title page it also mentions " and about 200 woodcuts" which are not in this volume but are in Volume Two. This volume only has the 44 steel engravings plus a vignette of a dog's head. All engravings and woodcuts are in really very good condition.
Half-leather bound and gilt edged. Internally the book is in very good condition. About 19 of the engravings at the front of the book have a pale water? mark at the bottom front edge about 7cms long and about 2cms high - see photos. All the actual engravings are in fine condition, the mark is just at the bottom edge of the page. The boards are rubbed - please see photo. On the back of the frontispiece are written four names and dates 1921, 1930 and 1970. Not dated c.1890s
Each engraving has a page with details of the drawing. The engraving are on very good thick quality paper also the text pages and each engraving has a 'tissue' guard paper thicker than the usual tissue. On some of the 'tissue' guards are a few spots of foxing, but definitely no foxing on the engravings. The pages are not numbered - each engraving has a text page and a tissue guard, as all pages are good quality, the book is about 5cms thick. The actual engravings are all in fine condition, the ones with the water? mark only have it at the bottom corner and not near the picture. A really superb book of Landseer's works.
