Lays of Ancient Rome with Ivry and the Armada

£39.99

Product description

"The Lays of Ancient Rome is a collection of narrative poems, by Thomas Babington, Lord Macaulay. Four of these recount heroic episodes from early Roman history with strong dramatic and tragic themes, giving the collection its name. The Lays were first published by Longman in 1842, at the beginning of the Victorian Era. They became immensely popular, and were a regular subject of recitation, then a common pastime. The Lays were standard reading in British public schools for more than a century. Winston Churchill memorised them while at Harrow School, in order to show that he was capable of mental prodigies." This edition from 1884, contains explanatory notes and a large preface. (Please note it is not the illustrated edition).
This small copy is in good condition for an antique book of over 130 years old. Inside the pages are tightly bound however there is occasional foxing throughout. A school prize book plate has been pasted down over the attractive marbled endpapers. The copy is beautifully bound in bright red leather boards, with gilt borders and a gilt school crest of Belgrave Square School, Monkstown in the centre of the front board. There is also gilt decorative dentelles around the outside edges of the cover, and gilt decoration to the spine. The pages have an attractive marbled outer edge on three sides. There is some rubbing and scratches to the leather but overall the cover is clean and bright.
