"Leonard Evetts (1909-1997) was born in Newport, Wales... His father was a builder and painting contractor. Early in his life Leonard was taught the art of signwriting. This fired his enthusiasm for both calligraphy and the elements of good design; it was an enthusiasm that lasted his entire life. While studying at the Royal College of Art, Leonard began work on his definitive study 'Roman Lettering'. First published in 1938, it ran to ten editions and was still in print fifty years later... as Head of Design at Newcastle King's College, he taught his principles of good design through calligraphy and the art of stained glass. It is the latter art form that now serves as Leonard's greatest legacy..." (quoted from exhibition leaflet)
