Les Fables de la Fontaine

£70.00

Product description

Tome 1.
Publiees d'apres les textes originaux avec la vie de l'auteur par Perrault son eloge par Chamfort, des notes, un glossaire, etc.

Paris, Charavay Freres editeurs, 51 Rue de Seine, 1881. pp 258.
Printed by Gustave Retaux in Abbeville.

Pretty royal blue paper covered card with gold mottling, quarter bound to spine in blue leather. Five raised bands to spine with nice gilt titles.
The binding is strong and of a very superior quality: no cocking or gutter. Top edge gilt: still nice and bright; other edges rough cut. The corners and edges all show wear but this book has the feel of something that will last a good while yet. A couple of small spots of Indian ink to block fore-edge. The emerald green page marker is still present. All pages tanned.

Showy red marbled paste downs and fly. End paper dedication to Mr A. C. Forrest from his friend J. L. M. April 15, 1888.
Interesting engraved frontispiece image of Charles Perrault, framed by a monkey, a cat and birds. Tanned tissue guard.

The life and praise of Jean de la Fontaine, told in six books, each with a dozen or so fables. Perrault was the founding father of the modern fairy tale and these short tales mostly involve animals in some measure.

Oxfam Bookshop Market Harborough

Oxfam is the UK's largest second hand bookseller. Oxfam bookshops offer a wider selection of books than most shops, from modern fiction and leisure interest to more specialist subjects, classics, and rare or collectable books. We also stock an attractive range of greetings cards and a good selection of stationery. Come and browse!

Could you help us by collecting donations from donors homes? Our shop receives many offers of generous donations that we have to turn down as we do not have volunteers able to collect. We would ask you to collect in your own car, at your convenience and reimburse your petrol costs. It might be a couple of times a month and would make a really big difference to our ability to make money.
